Menstruation keeps girls out of school—they’re potentially missing an average of 9 weeks a school year! Not only due to fear of staining their school uniforms and being embarrassed in front of their classmates, but also due to pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. Intimidation resulting from not having access to clean, private, and safe facilities is also a deterrent. Menstrual hygiene items are getting more and more expensive as the economy of Nigeria continues to plummet even as inflation continues to skyrocket. Many young girls grow up with false beliefs about menstruation, and their whole life becomes shaped by cultural stigmas and religious taboos that are very harmful to their mental health and general wellbeing. Educating girls about their bodies helps them to be less ashamed and more empowered and in control of their health. Menstrual Education can help them get access to sanitary products which reduces prevalence of disease and infections due to unsanitary practices, while also teaching them how to take care of themselves. • Not only are reusable menstrual products better for the environment, but they are also easier to make. Plus, they are economically bearable. • Sometimes in exchange for money to afford hygiene products, girls will exchange sexual favors, which can increase their risk for STI/STDs, trafficking, and more endangerment. • It is only natural that if they can’t afford regular expensive pads or tampons, to cut down Costs, they might have to use one pad or tampon a day, causing infection and irritation. • Addressing period poverty will increase the number of girls in school consistently, and positively impact their social and economic wellbeing, helping to keep them on track for graduation and for their future careers, professions, and aspirations.
